Murder She Wrote: Classic TV Series

Murder She Wrote has always been one of my favorite television series. It's not that winning awards makes a show good; it's that good shows just end up winning awards. The storyline was always captivating, and the characters colorful. If you have the luck to find a Murder She Wrote rerun on TV, you should grab the popcorn, pull up a chair, and enjoy the magic.

I remember watching Murder She Wrote when I was younger. I was always amazed that a mystery writer would have the capability to solve well thought out crimes without being misled by false leads. Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) is a widowed, retired school teacher. She has become a famous writer in her later years, but she is always very down to Earth. As such, she has a nearly endless cast of friends from all over the world. Wherever a mystery springs up, Jessica is there, solving real problems and remaking them into mystery novels.

During the life of the Murder She Wrote TV series it won 5 Television awards. In 1985 the show won its first award (An Emmy) for "Outstanding Music Composition for a Series". The next year it won "Outstanding Costume Design for a Series". Over the rest of its run it won "Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series" four times, "Best TV Series - Drama", and "Best Episode of a TV Series". There is no arguing that the show had a polished feel that brought all the elements of the story together.

The only real complaint fans have with Murder She Wrote is the 6th season "replacement detective" episodes. In the show's 6th season, Angela Lansbury was working on several projects and couldn't dedicate the time to actually act in each episode (It's important to remember the show was made weekly, with 52 episodes a season). As a result, the producers were forced to add a new element to the show. The "replacement detective" episodes featured Jessica's friends solving mysteries, with a brief wrap by Angela Lansbury. Regardless, the Murder She Wrote TV series is just fantastic and always worth watching.
